Several York County staff were recognized recently for receiving notable awards on the state and national level.

Angela Inglett, director of program development for the Virginia Association of Counties, presented VACo and NACo (National Association of Counties) Achievement Awards to Bonnie Fitz, Parks and Recreation superintendent, for the division’s “Leaders in Training” program. “Leaders in Training” serves as an excellent transition for teens ages 14-16 as they move from a summer camper to a potential recreation leader. The program helps teens develop skills for future employment opportunities or civic duties, develops leadership skills, and is a meaningful way for youth to spend their summer breaks.

Tim Wyatt, deputy director of Information Technology, recently received a Governor’s Technology Award for the development of Citizen Cyber Security materials.  Knowing that citizens face security challenges through the internet regularly and are bombarded daily with spam, Wyatt worked to develop an informational program for staff and citizens to help them secure their internet connections — whether it be from an unsecured Wi-Fi in their home or falling victim to one of the many phishing schemes. Among the locations where Wyatt presented his program was the Senior Center of York, where a large crowd listened intently as Wyatt gave his presentation on cyber security.

York County’s webmaster, JoAnn Mewborn, accepted the Pinnacle Award and Members’ Choice Award from the National Association of Government Web Professionals.  The award was presented to Mewborn for the county’s highly organized and interactive website, www.yorkcounty.gov, that contains a huge amount of helpful information. The site was judged on content, organization, design, performance and flexibility, accessibility, team size, interactivity and more.
