Interstate 64 has reopened following a multi-car pileup that happened early Sunday morning.

Virginia State Police say the crash occurred about 7:51 a.m. The final total of vehicles involved included 69, and 35 people were transported to hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to life-threatening.

The crash shut down the interstate westbound at the 239 mile marker near Camp Peary, according to Virginia State Police. They believe an icy bridge plus thick fog contributed to the pileup.

More than two dozen troopers helped investigate and clear the scene, which ultimately included crashes on the eastbound side as well from rubberneckers, according to Virginia State Police.
