Two additional deaths from COVID-19 have been reported in the Peninsula Health District, according to a press release from the Virginia Department of Health.

Both recently became ill and were admitted to a local hospital, where they died. Both were females, one in her 60s and another in her 80s. The cause of death was respiratory failure.

“We at VDH are so sorry to hear of the loss of more Peninsula residents,” said Peninsula Acting Health Director Dr. Steve Julian. “ I want to express our sadness and let the families and friends of the patients know we are thinking about them during this difficult time.

“I want to remind our community about how important it is to follow the recommendations being provided to protect our elderly and those with underlying conditions. Everyone has a responsibility to protect each other.”

The press release stated the Peninsula Health District has launched an investigation to identify the women’s whereabouts and close contacts during the time they may have acquired or spread the virus. It is not yet known where they acquired the virus.

These two deaths were not included in the number of deaths reported on the VDH website as of noon Tuesday. That tally stood at nine.
