Shop small this season
Published 6:21 pm Wednesday, November 27, 2019
This edition comes out during Thanksgiving week, and we all know what that means. The (relatively new) adage goes that only in America do we trample others trying to buy things only one day after being thankful for what we already have.
One of the best antidotes to the consumerism of the holiday season is to eschew the chaos of Black Friday and spend extra time with your family. That can also mean going shopping on what’s becoming known as Small Business Saturday instead.
York County and Poquoson are privileged to have quite a number of excellent small businesses that can provide lots of gift ideas. We’re certain that you can find something for everyone on your list without resorting to a big-box store or risking a delivery box getting stolen off of your porch.
Many small businesses are able to provide the extra touch of talking directly with the owner or another neighbor who can help you find a great gift if you tell them a little bit about your loved one.
If you look in our community calendar, you can find any number of ideas for events that can put you in touch with dozens or even hundreds of local vendors and artists that can help you find a unique gift. Many local artists, if their plates aren’t already too full, may be willing to take commissions if you ask.
If “things” aren’t your thing, and they’re not the thing of the person on your list, we’re sure some quality time and a local experience would make a great gift.
We wish all of our readers a safe and happy Thanksgiving and a great kickoff to the holidays.
