It was a one-mile journey 16 years in the making, but the move is finally done — much to the joy, we’re sure, of those in charge.

The Tom Hunt Store, built in the 1880s, recently made the move about a mile down the road to the Poquoson Museum site. As correspondent Selina Foreman quite rightly pointed out in her feature on the move, general stores are a relic of the past, a throwback to a time when people could visit one store and get everything they needed — and pick up their mail, too.

Alternately known as the Tom Hunt Store or the Odd Post Office, depending on which part of the building you were referring to, the building was donated to the Poquoson Museum in 2003. It had been run by Poquoson resident and postmistress Sarah E. Hunt and her husband, John Thomas Hunt, who ran the general store side.

After the long wait and lots of preparation to ensure the move would go smoothly, the precarious operation was almost anticlimactic — and that’s a good thing.
